years

plant based, and I still love food.

People ask me what I eat. This is my answer.

1

Growing up

Raised on the standard American diet. Meat, dairy, eggs and a lot of processed food. I had bad allergies, stomach pain, and I was skinny fat most of my life.

2

Getting active

Rec sports in high school, the gym in college. It helped, but my diet didn't change, and it felt like it cancelled out the work.

35

Going all in

At 35 I cut out meat, dairy, eggs and animal products. Within a week I leaned out. Then I got too lean.

4

Learning to eat enough

I had to eat more calories and find good protein. Once I learned the amounts, everything clicked.

10

Ten years later

My allergies and stomach issues cleared up, my cholesterol came down, and my last colonoscopy came back clean.

I still have an Impossible Burger or a vegan cheat meal now and then. Most days I eat whole foods. Plant Me is how I'd help a friend start.

This is my experience. Yours will be your own, and your doctor should be part of it.

Questions I get

The usual questions

Will I get enough protein?

Yes, if you plan for it. A cup of cooked lentils has about 18 g. Half a cup of firm tofu has about 21 g. Set your goal and every swap shows its grams.

Do I need supplements?

Take vitamin B12. It's the one you can't skip on a fully plant-based diet. Ask your doctor about vitamin D, iron and omega-3 too.

Do I have to go 100%?

No. Start with breakfast. Most of the benefit comes from eating more whole plants, not from being perfect.

Is it expensive?

Beans, lentils, oats, rice and frozen vegetables are some of the cheapest food in the store. The shopping lists show what to buy and how much.

Will I be hungry?

Whole plant foods are filling, so many people actually under-eat at first. That's what happened to me. Plant Me sizes meals to your calories so you eat enough.
